It is very expensive to buy all the Android running devices and then test your developed app in them, and yes it is stupid to that too. So to save you money there is an emulator bundled with your Android Development Tool (ADT) named as Android Virtual Device or AVD. Creating AVD is really simple but running them on your system is another story.
The AVD bundled with ADT is very slow, slower than the turtle and annoying too. Of course you don't have much time to just test the app you developed, thus you need a much faster emulator as compared to the AVD of Android Development Tool.
The best alternative for the usual AVD is the Genymotion. It is the fastest open source Android app testing emulator. Genymotion is simple and effective and is packed with many features like:

Gives you the ability to test your app on different Android devices
Easily available on the Eclipse or Android Development Tool with the Genymotion Plugin

Please note that to make the Genymotion work you need virtualbox installed on your system, virtualbox is bundled with Genymotion for Windows but for other systems you need to download it separately.
